One day, the Palace of Justice charges Monsieur Cassel with investigating the strange murder of a pensioner, found dead in his apartment building. At first glance his investigation, to Investigator Cassel, seems like just another run-of-the-mill dossier.
Then a man with an ugly past visits Monsieur Cassel at his office, summoned there for questioning into the pensioner's murder. From that moment on, Investigator's Cassel's safe predictable world is turned upside down. The trail leads back to the dreaded past, France's Dark years, the time of Germany's World War II Occupation.
Along the way, he meets a beautiful Jewish woman, haunted by those years. She tries, but fails, to warn Cassel of the reemergence of the Nazis in Europe.
Only when tragedy strikes does Cassel awake from his denial, his foolish self-absorption. He then fully understands, as the Occupation portended, a larger evil, beyond his Little Miseries, lurks.
Murder Without Pity is based on extensive interviews, research, and visits to the City of Light. According to the author, Steve Haberman, Murder Without Pity is the first in a series of mysteries set entirely or in part in Paris.
