H Jay Scheuermann

Dispatches from the Frontlines of Medicine: Brain Maintenance: How To Prevent Stroke and Delay Dementia

Who among us hasn't had that frightening moment when we can't think of a word, or someone's name? Preserving brain function for later in life is one of the most important health matters that should command attention. But so few of us understand what causes dementia or stroke, or what we can do to help ourselves so we don't get dementia.

The first section reviews The Nun Study. Retired sisters had their mental functions tested yearly until death, then autopsies of their brain were done and correlated with their mental ability. The significant findings in this study were that the combination of stroke and Alzheimer's caused more dementia than either alone, that head trauma aggravated mental decline, and folic acid helped ward it off. She explains current theories on how the brain develops and the surprising information that brain growth and connections between brain cells increase until between 50 and 60 years of age. She recounts the work of Dr. George Vaillant and the Grant Study which followed men for fifty years and points the way to the secrets of successful aging. She also teaches us about CAT scans, MRI's, PET and SPECT scans of the brain.

In the second section of the book, What Exactly is Alzheimer's Disease? Dr. Wilson explains in an easy to understand way, the plaques and tangles and brain cell loss that leads to dementia. She talks about the genetics of Alzheimer's disease, and most importantly, what an individual can do to prevent dementia. Even though someone may have some of the physical changes in the brain of Alzheimer's it doesn't mean that he or she will get dementia. Some depends on brain reserve. And a lot depends on what a person does to care for his or her brain from midlife on. She is very specific about the lifestyles and medicines that preserve brain cells.

In the third section, Dr. Wilson speaks about strokes, blocked arteries to the blood vessels in the brain. Stroke destroys brain cells and can often be prevented. She tells readers the risks for stroke, and what they can do to counter each risk.

Dr. Wilson reviews the Women's Health Initiative Study's reports on estrogen and the brain. Some of the facts in the actual papers are different than what was reported at first. The brain has estrogen receptors, and she concludes that we cannot yet say whether taking estrogen from menopause on keeps more brain cells functioning. She covers all sides of the controversy.

This is a self-help book to beat all others covering how to protect your brain from the insults of Alzheimer's disease and stroke. We all need this information for ourselves, and for those we love.
